On Tuesday 1st May 2018 – both Hayes Lane, and Princes Park opened their gates to host the 2017-18 Bostik South Division 1 playoff semi finals.
Third-placed Cray Wanderers, who finished 10 points adrift from automatic promotion earned a home advantage against 6th positioning Walton Casuals, who secured their playoff position on the final day of the season following a 4-1 win over Ashford United.
These two sides last met on the 21st April, where it was goals galore at Elmbridge Xcel Sports Hub – 6 goals were scored inside the opening 17 minutes of the game. The divisions leading goal-scorer, Josh Kelly, added four to his tally, and it was the Stags who came out on top with a 5-2 victory.
It was déjà vu for Greenwich Borough and Corinthian-Casuals, who drew the same playoff tie this time last year. The Cannons secured a home advantage through their 4th placed finish, and their superior goal difference separated them from Casuals, who too finished with 87 points.
Both Greenwich’s and Corinthians’ league encounters came early on in the season – In September, Mu Maan netted a 90th minute winner for the Chocolate & Pink, and in October, Greenwich doubled Casuals’ previous efforts with a 2-0 win.
Last years playoff semi-final saw Corinthian-Casuals reach the final with a 4-3 win at Princes Park. The final was however decided by penalties, and Dorking Wanderers earned promotion after a gut-wrenching 5-4 shootout.
